Quick Synopsis:

The survival of the human spirit has never seen such insurmountable odds in celebrity director Julian Schnabel’s film which explores the possibilities of creating an inner life when one is shut off from the outer one through the extraordinary and tragic life of French Elle magazine editor-in-chief Jean-Dominique Bauby. In 1995 at the age of forty-three, the Parisian bon vivant, playboy, and father of three had the entire world in his hand when he suffered a massive stroke which left him completely paralyzed with locked-in syndrome; a condition in which a patient is aware and awake, but cannot move or communicate due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body. And save for his mental functions conveyed as inner monologues, his mind has only a single eyeball as an outlet for expression, and must spell out words by selecting them one letter at a time, blinking when the appropriate letter is recited to him. While heavy doses of confusion, regret, and pain are a strong theme early on, what transpires is a story of a man who keeps himself alive through his limitless imagination and memory; a film that awakens a trapped life with the kind of poetry only the camera can write.

More and more people are having regular manicures, and it’s the sort of thing you can learn to do at home, By following a few simple rules, you can improve the appearance of your hands and nails. The basic equipment you’ll need to complete the task are :- A pack of cotton wool balls, some fingernail polish remover, 1 emery board, a nail trimmer, a cuticle remover, a bottle of fingernail polish, and some paper towels.

Firstly, remove the old polish, by moistening a cotton wool ball with nail polish remover. There are different types of polish remover available. Press the cotton wool on the nail for a few seconds to soften the old polish. Wipe gently with the cotton ball on the nail starting at the base.

Next shape the nail – which should be filed into oval tips. Begin on the little finger of the left hand and move towards the thumb. Slant the fingernail file or emery board so that the filing is done mostly to the underside of the nail. File each nail from the corner to the centre, going from right to left and then left to right. On each side of the nail, stroke in one direction only. Repeat the process in the right hand.

Soak the fingers in a small finger bowl to soften the cuticles. A few drops of mild dish soap added to the water works well. Carefully dry the hand with a small towel, then place the hand on the towel. Dry the hand while pushing back the cuticle and skin on each fingernail, very carefully.

Apply the cuticle remover by carefully following directions on the bottle. Gently loosen the cuticle with an orangewood stick. Keep the cuticle moist, then wash gently and dry.

Clean under the free edge of the nail by dipping a cotton tipped stick in soapy water, and cleaning from the centre out to each side.

Occasionally you have to remove the cuticle with small scissors. Apply cuticle oil or cream at the base of the nail. Brush nails gently in soapy water with a downward motion. Dry your hands and nails thoroughly. Now use a fine emery board to buff your nails, giving them a smooth edge.

Apply the base coat using long strokes. When it is dry to the touch, apply polish lightly, with strokes from the base to the tip. Excess polish on the cuticle or nail can be removed with a cotton tipped stick. Apply a top or seal coat. If you brush it around and under the tips of the nail this will give added protection.

Last of all, apply lotion, if time permits. Your nails need to be completely dry. Start at the wrists, and move down to the fingertips. Manicuring – now you’ve nailed it!

The shear was tested and initially dose not fully cut a dry tissue as seen in the beginning of the video. Taken apart each blade is sharpened on the ride and on the convex edge as shown. Then at the end of the video it is again tested with a dry tissue and dose cut properly, with a clean cut. Now it is a good tool for cutting hair.

I did other things to the shown shear to get it in top shape not shown in the video. Stropping for example. I wanted to show in general is done to sharpen a convex shear. When I first got started in this I found it difficult to visualize. I wanted to give an idea of how a convex shear is sharpened. If a person knows certian things like how to do the ride line with the right pressure and sharpening the convex edge they can successfully restore a scissor.
When I sharpen professionally I use a electric sharpener of my own design which I may in the future put on. Most sharpeners use a electric sharpeners. Some of sharpeners actually harm shears. Most all sharpeners still use a stone to do the ride lines. Probably the original Japanese originators of the convex scissors just used a stone as I show in this video.
This is a convex edge hair scissor that all hair stylists use.
Most house scissors and fabric scissors are beveled edge scissors and are sharpened much differently. Convexed scissors are just for cutting hair.

Can you now sharpen a pair of hair scissors as a result of watching this video some of you may be thinking? Don’t experiment with a expensive pair. There are many shears ruined by the well intentioned. I love to sharpen hair shears. It is both a relaxation and a vocation for me and I seek out dull shears wherever I can find them in the Washington DC area. Contact me (Rod) if you have any questions at Sharpeningman@Yahoo.com

This is the first time I ever did this and it was a lot of fun.
