“Morning” said a quiet voice from just outside the kitchen entrance

Alexandria cringed at the sound. It was strange to hear Bridget, the girl who just a few weeks ago was competing with Joe Jonas for the most outgoing and loudest person known to mankind, being so quiet and reserved now.
That wasn’t the only change in her either. Bridget’s once bright blue eyes were now dull and had turned a shade of murky green. Her tanned face, blushing face was now so pale it verged on translucency. The skin there was now stretched so thin on her bone structure you could actually see some of her veins. In fact, the only thing still the same about her was the cascading waves of golden hair falling to the middle of her back. And had she had it her way, that would be gone too. Luckily Alexandria walked into the bathroom and literally slapped the pair of scissors out of Bridget’s hand before she had a chance to go through with it.

“toast” Alexandria asked, holding out a plate of the bread like an offering to her. Bridget hesitantly sat in the only vacant chair at the table which was coincidentally next to Haley’s…coincidentally.

“So!” Alexandria said five minutes later, louder than was necessary to break the awkward silence “when your dance recital Bridge?”
“it’s not a recital” Bridget said, eying a piece of toast in her hand before tossing it into her mouth “it’s a competition. And it’s in another month or so…you’ll be there right?”

“Oh yeah, I’ll be there” Alexandria said “Haley, wanna go together or do you just want to meet up there?”
Haley’s head had been down, her eyes trained on her food while she listened to the conversation but Alexandria’s last comment made her forget the act.
Squinting her eyes at Alexandria in a way that was made to clearly relay the message ‘I will murder you’ she said

“Gee, I don’t know Alexandria. I think I want to keep that day open. You know, incase Kevin ever decides to talk to me again and wants to go out.”

A sharp screech of a chair being pushed away from the table and a door slam later, Bridget was out of the dorm.
Alexandria folded her arms across her chest and shook her head disapprovingly at Haley “God Hales, this is going too far. How can you pick a boy you’ve known for less than a year over a friend you’ve had for three years?”

Haley shrugged and looked back down at her food, pretending to concentrate on it so she wouldn’t have to see the death stare that Alexandria was giving her. She didn’t look back up until she heard Alexandria get up and go into her room then emerge again wearing a jacket and her backpack and leave.

Haley stayed for some moments more just sitting and playing with her food which suddenly didn’t seem to appetizing anymore then she too left for her first class of the day.
